Governor Alfred E. Smith/Sunken Meadow State Park Golf Course is a public 27-hole state-park golf facility in Kings Park, New York, rather than one conventional 18-hole course. Its golf consists of three separate nine-hole layouts — Red, Blue and Green — that can be paired into different 18-hole combinations.
Alfred Tull designed the courses. Historical material records Red and Green as the first two nines, built in 1962, with Blue following in 1964. New York State Parks currently publishes separate yardages, ratings and slopes for each nine rather than treating the property as a single fixed 18-hole layout.
The course is a 27-hole golf course. Designed by Alfred Tull, the course originally opened in 1962. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Green, Pro Shop, Club Hire, Restaurant, Bar.
Golf at Governor Alfred E. Smith/Sunken Meadow State Park was developed as a state-park public facility on Long Island. Alfred Tull designed the courses, with the Red and Green nines established first in 1962.
Tull was known for routing golf courses by working directly with the land before relying on topographical mapping. At Sunken Meadow the resulting holes use the property's hilly and varied woodland terrain rather than imposing a uniform character across the site.
The Blue nine followed the original Red and Green courses in 1964, creating the present 27-hole facility. Motorized golf carts were introduced in 1997. The three nines continue to operate in multiple 18-hole combinations.
New York State Parks operates the three nines as a public golf facility and publishes separate Forward, Regulation and Championship ratings, slopes and yardages for Red, Blue and Green. Reservations are handled through the state parks golf system.
