About Bandon Dunes

Bandon Dunes is the original golf course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort on the southern Oregon coast. Designed by Scottish architect David McLay Kidd, it opened in 1999 and established the resort's approach to links golf. The course occupies coastal dunes above the Pacific Ocean, with a routing that repeatedly approaches and moves away from the shoreline.

Wind, sandy terrain and the use of ground contours are central features of the design. The resort emphasizes walking golf, and the course is part of a larger destination that now includes several independently designed layouts. Those other courses should not be confused with Bandon Dunes itself: Pacific Dunes opened in 2001, Bandon Trails in 2005, Old Macdonald in 2010 and Sheep Ranch in 2020.

The course is an 18-hole links golf course. Designed by David McLay Kidd, the course originally opened in 1999. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Golf Shop, Accommodation, Restaurants, Bars, Caddies, Lodge, Suite.

Origins

The resort began with Mike Keiser's ambition to establish a golf destination on the Oregon coast that reflected the traditional links courses of Scotland. Keiser selected a remote stretch of coastal dunes and engaged David McLay Kidd to design the first course. The resort also retained KemperSports to manage construction and subsequent operations.

Did You Know?
David McLay Kidd was a relatively untested young architect when Mike Keiser selected him for the resort's first course.

Design Philosophy

Kidd studied the coastal property extensively before developing the routing. The design uses the natural dune landscape and recurring exposure to Pacific winds, with holes moving between inland dune corridors and ocean-facing ground. The course was intended to rely on the land's existing character rather than extensive artificial landscaping.

Development

Construction took place during 1997 and 1998, and Bandon Dunes opened in 1999. Its reception encouraged Keiser to commission additional courses. Tom Doak's Pacific Dunes followed in 2001, and the resort subsequently expanded with Bandon Trails, Old Macdonald, Bandon Preserve, Sheep Ranch and Shorty's.

Each addition is a distinct design rather than an extension of the original Bandon Dunes scorecard.

Recognition

The opening of Bandon Dunes established David McLay Kidd as a prominent golf course architect, and its reception led Mike Keiser to commission the resort's later courses.

Today

Bandon Dunes remains an 18-hole walking links course within the larger resort. It is still identified separately from the six other golf layouts offered on the property.
