Barnbougle Dunes is one of Australia’s premier links golf courses, located on Tasmania’s spectacular north-east coast near Bridport. Designed by acclaimed architects Tom Doak and Mike Clayton, the course opened in 2004 and has earned international recognition for its authentic links character, consistently ranking among the best golf courses in Australia and the world.
Set across towering coastal dunes overlooking Bass Strait, the layout makes exceptional use of the natural landscape. Rolling fairways, rugged bunkering, native grasses and ever-changing coastal winds ensure that no two rounds are quite the same. Rather than relying on water hazards or dense tree lines, Barnbougle Dunes challenges golfers through strategic shot placement, creative ground play and thoughtful course management. Firm fairways and undulating greens reward players who can adapt to the conditions and embrace the traditional links style of golf.
The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 72, 4,995m. Designed by Tom Doak and Mike Clayton, the course originally opened in 2004. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Bar, Golf Lessons, Lodge, Restaurant, Suite, Villa, Driving Range, Putting Green, and 4 more.
Few modern golf courses have reshaped a nation's golfing landscape as dramatically as Barnbougle Dunes. What began as one young enthusiast's hunch about a stretch of windswept dunes on a Tasmanian potato farm would, within a few years, put the island on the world golf map.
Greg Ramsay recognised the site's potential in the early 2000s and wrote to renowned American architect Tom Doak in 2001, eventually persuading landowner Richard Sattler — himself not a golfer — to back the idea. A visit from Bandon Dunes developer Mike Keiser helped convince Sattler the project could work as a genuine golf destination, not just a course. Construction began in 2003, and Barnbougle Dunes opened in December 2004.
Doak worked alongside Australian architect and former touring professional Mike Clayton, and the pair built the course to follow the land rather than reshape it — routing holes through the natural contours of the dunes instead of flattening them for a conventional layout.
The result is a firm, fast-running links course that isn't especially long on the card, but asks constant questions of shot-making and course management, particularly when Bass Strait's coastal wind picks up.
Barnbougle's success turned a single golf course into a golf resort. Lost Farm, a second course designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw — an unusual 20 holes — opened across the river in December 2010 on more dramatic, undulating terrain. A third course, the par-3 Bougle Run, followed in 2021.
Alongside the courses, the site grew to include accommodation villas, a restaurant, and conference facilities, transforming what began as a single links course into a multi-day golf trip.
Barnbougle Dunes became the first new Australian golf course in decades to break into the World's Top 100 shortly after opening, and has remained a fixture on the list ever since, regularly ranked among the world's top 30–50 courses by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine. It is also rated the number one public-access golf course in Australia.
More than two decades after opening, Barnbougle Dunes remains one of golf's great pilgrimage destinations — a course golfers travel across the world to play, despite (or perhaps because of) its remote location on Tasmania's coast. Alongside Lost Farm and Bougle Run, it anchors a resort that draws golfers for days at a time, not just a single round.
