Barnbougle Lost Farm is a 20-hole public links course on Tasmania's north-east coast near Bridport, immediately across the Forester River from Barnbougle Dunes. It officially opened on 10 December 2010 and was designed through Coore & Crenshaw, with Bill Coore identified by Barnbougle as the head architect responsible for the layout. The complete Black scorecard measures 6,503 metres and par 78 across 20 holes, including additional par-three holes 13a and 18a.
Its conventional rated 18-hole Black configuration is 6,263 metres and par 72, with a Golf Australia scratch rating of 73 and slope of 132. Lost Farm moves between the Anderson Bay coastline, the Forester River and substantially steeper inland dunes than those at neighbouring Barnbougle Dunes. Wide fairways, strategic bunkering and undulating greens reflect Coore's minimalist approach and allow wind and playing angles to influence strategy.
The course is a 20-hole links golf course. It plays to par 78, 6,503m. Designed by Bill Coore, the course originally opened in 2010. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Restaurant, Bar, Driving Range, Putting Greens, Chipping Green, Practice Bunkers, Golf Lessons, Club Hire, and 6 more.
Lost Farm was the second major course created at Barnbougle after the success of neighbouring Barnbougle Dunes. The broader golf project grew from coastal farmland east of Bridport owned by Tasmanian businessman and farmer Richard Sattler. Golf Australia reported in 2010 that Sattler, the largest landholder in the area, had originally committed part of his beachside property to the first Barnbougle course.
After The Dunes established an international reputation, development expanded across the Forester River onto the Lost Farm land. Coore & Crenshaw were engaged for the second course, and Lost Farm officially opened on 10 December 2010.
Bill Coore approached Lost Farm as a complement to Barnbougle Dunes rather than a second version of it. He told Golf Australia that the two sites were surprisingly different despite their proximity. Lost Farm's dunes are generally steeper and more dramatic, and its routing moves both along the coast and inland.
Barnbougle describes Coore's approach as minimalist and based on traditional strategic golf. Wide fairways provide multiple angles, while bunkering, uneven greens, wind and natural contours influence the preferred line of play. The unusual 20-hole routing emerged from the opportunities Coore found in the site: in addition to the normal sequence of holes, two short par threes were retained as 13a and 18a rather than discarded.
Lost Farm was built as more than an additional golf course. Contemporary reporting before its official opening described a coordinated development incorporating the course, clubhouse, restaurant and bar, well-being facilities and on-site lodge accommodation. The opening expanded Barnbougle from a single-course destination into a multi-course resort.
A later addition, the 14-hole Bougle Run short course, was also designed by Bill Coore and occupies land around and above parts of the Lost Farm property, but it remains a distinct course rather than part of Lost Farm's 20 holes.
Recognition came almost immediately. Barnbougle states that within a week of opening Lost Farm entered Golf Australia Magazine's Australian top 10 and Golf Magazine's world top 100. The course has remained prominent in international rankings.
Golf Digest's 2026-27 World's 100 Greatest Courses places Lost Farm at No. 38 and identifies it as one of Australia's leading courses. Golf Digest also highlights the unusual 20-hole configuration and credits Bill Coore's work on the site while noting that Ben Crenshaw was unable to participate personally because of scheduling conflicts.
Lost Farm remains a public-access links course within the Barnbougle golf destination. All 20 holes can be played in a round, while Golf Australia maintains separate handicap ratings for the conventional 18-hole configurations from Black, Terracotta, Blue and Cream tees for both men and women. The property supports golf with extensive practice facilities, professional instruction, caddies and rental clubs, as well as Lost Farm Lodge, restaurant and bar facilities and a spa.
Current green fees are shared with Barnbougle Dunes, allowing visitors to purchase an 18-hole round or all-day golf.
