About Bigbury Golf Club

Bigbury Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-70 coastal course at Bigbury-on-Sea in South Devon. The club dates to 1923, when Commander Charles Evans made land available for an initial nine-hole course. After the early layout proved successful, five-time Open champion and golf-course architect J.

H. Taylor and Frederick George Hawtree were engaged in the development of the expanded 18-hole course. Bigbury's elevated site overlooks the South Devon coast, Avon estuary and Burgh Island, and the exposed location means wind is an important part of the playing conditions.

The course is an 18-hole golf course. Designed by J. H. Taylor and Frederick George Hawtree, the course originally opened in 1923. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Golf Shop, Club Fitting, Golf Lessons, Clubhouse, Bar, Dining, Buggy Hire, Trolley Hire.

Origins

Bigbury Golf Club traces its beginnings to 1923, when landowner Commander Charles Evans leased part of his property for a nine-hole golf course. The project proved successful enough for the club to pursue an expansion to a full 18 holes.

Did You Know?
Bigbury began as a nine-hole course on land provided by Commander Charles Evans.

Design Philosophy

J. H. Taylor and Frederick George Hawtree were brought in for the expansion of the course.

The resulting layout occupies elevated coastal ground rather than conventional low-lying linksland, with the exposed site making wind and changing coastal weather recurring strategic factors.

Development

The club retained the Taylor-Hawtree architectural association as a central part of its identity and today refers to the layout as its JH Taylor course. The course has remained an 18-hole facility while the club has developed visitor golf, competitions, professional services and clubhouse facilities around it.

Today

Bigbury continues to operate as an 18-hole par-70 members club that actively accepts visitor bookings. Its official site states that the club has provided golf at Bigbury since 1923.
