Origins

The roots of the course go back to 1940, when 301 acres were reserved for golf in the developing Bryanston township. Discussions led by Hedding, Allridge and Bentwich in 1943 expanded the idea from a golf course into a full country club. An official committee was operating by 1948, and Charles Hugh Alison was commissioned to design the golf course in 1949.

Did You Know?
Bryanston's original clubhouse was destroyed by fire during a ball in August 1953, only two years after it opened.

Development

Construction was undertaken over the following two years, with Tommy Tomsett and Koos de Beer involved in delivering Alison's design. The clubhouse and first nine holes opened in 1951, with Sir Ernest Oppenheimer serving as the club's first president. The clubhouse was lost to fire in 1953 and subsequently rebuilt.

Today

Bryanston remains an 18-hole par-72 parkland course and a broader country club. The golf course measures 6,768 metres in the configuration published by the club and incorporates water on 11 holes.
