Golf Course Architect
Charles Hugh Alison (1883–1952) was a British golf course architect of the Golden Age, known for his partnership with Harry Colt and John Morrison through the firm Colt, Alison & Morrison Ltd. He designed and influenced scores of courses worldwide, notably introducing strategic, bold bunkering and routing grounded in natural terrain.
Educated at Malvern College and New College, Oxford, Alison met Harry Colt and began his architectural career assisting on prominent UK projects before forming the partnership in 1928. He traveled extensively—in North America he laid out courses including Orchard Lake Country Club (opened mid‑1920s), Milwaukee Country Club, and others.
In the early 1930s he made a profound mark in Asia (especially Japan) with classic courses like Hirono and the Fuji course at Kawana. His design legacy spans Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa, and he is celebrated for his strategic layouts and dramatic bunkering.
