About Campo de Golf de Osa

Campo de Golf de Osa corresponds to the current Osa Golf Course at San Buenaventura in Costa Rica's Southern Pacific region. The official course site identifies it as a nine-hole public course designed by Canadian architect Dan Lavis in 2007. Construction of the first nine began in early 2008 after establishment of an eight-acre grass nursery and a nursery containing more than 20,000 trees and shrubs.

Earthmoving began in February 2008 and the tees and greens were planted that April. Plans for a second nine were suspended when the 2008 recession affected the project, so the present course remains nine holes despite some third-party directories incorrectly describing it as an 18-hole facility. The greens use Platinum Paspalum.

The course is a 9-hole golf course. The course was designed by Dan Lavis. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Golf Cart Hire, Club Hire, Accommodation.

Origins

Canadian architect Dan Lavis designed the course in 2007. Before major earthworks began, the project established an eight-acre nursery for Platinum Paspalum turf and another nursery containing more than 20,000 trees and shrubs. Construction of the first nine holes started in early 2008, with earthmoving beginning in February and tees and greens planted from nursery-grown sprigs in April.

Did You Know?
More than 20,000 trees and shrubs were propagated in a nursery as part of the original course-construction project.

Design Philosophy

The course was integrated into a heavily vegetated landscape, retaining the character of the surrounding jungle. Creeks, elevation changes, bunkers and undulating greens form recurring strategic elements. Platinum Paspalum was selected for the greens in part for its tolerance of difficult environmental conditions.

Development

The original plan contemplated an additional nine holes. According to the course's official history, that expansion was placed on hold after the 2008 recession. Later economic development in the Osa region renewed discussion of completing the back nine, but the current official course remains nine holes.

Today

Osa Golf Course operates as a public nine-hole facility seven days a week. Golfers can walk or hire carts, rental clubs are available, and the property also promotes stay-and-play accommodation.
