The Original Hackett Course is Carne Golf Links' original 18-hole routing on the Mullet Peninsula in County Mayo. It was the final course designed by Irish architect Eddie Hackett. Development began on a limited budget around the end of the 1980s, with Hackett deliberately making minimal use of heavy earthmoving equipment and fitting tees and greens into the existing dune landscape.
The development process took roughly eight years, with the course opening in stages before the full 18 was established. Current golf-industry sources put the Hackett routing at about 6,700 yards and par 72. Carne later added a further nine holes, but the Original Hackett Course remains a defined 18-hole routing.
The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,702 yards. Designed by Eddie Hackett, the course originally opened in 1992. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Practice facilities, Life Membership.
A local nonprofit organisation acquired roughly 220 acres of farmland on the Mullet Peninsula with tourism and golf development in mind and invited Eddie Hackett to create the course. Work began around 1989 on a very limited construction budget.
Hackett followed his established preference for working with the natural ground. Carne records that tees and greens largely occurred naturally and that very little earthmoving machinery was used.
The original 18 was followed in 2013 by an additional nine holes on unused dune land. Those newer holes eventually became part of the Wild Atlantic Dunes composite routing, while the original Hackett 18 continued as its own course.
Carne offers both the Original Hackett Course and Wild Atlantic Dunes as separate 18-hole choices, as well as 27-hole options.
