Chechessee Creek Club is a private 18-hole golf club in Okatie, South Carolina, in the coastal Lowcountry between Beaufort and Hilton Head Island. The course was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw and incorporates the region's native oaks, pines and sandy terrain. The architects pursued a traditional style of golf architecture, placing importance on strategic choices, ground contours and approaches to greens.
The club underwent a substantial renovation in 2015, led by Coore with contributions from the original design team. Work included replacing turf, altering bunkers, introducing additional forward tees and improving bunker construction. The course reopened on 4 September 2015.

Chechessee Creek Club was conceived as a private golf development in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw were commissioned to create a traditional course using the site's native vegetation, sandy ground and existing natural features. The project became an example of the design partnership's preference for understated architecture and strategic options rather than excessive earthmoving.
Coore and Crenshaw sought to create a course rewarding imagination, precision and thoughtful shot selection. The routing and green complexes were intended to work with the property's natural contours. Native oaks and pines provide a visual framework, while bunkering and ground features influence decisions from tee to green.
The design reflects the architects' broader interest in traditional golf architecture.
After approximately sixteen years of operation, the club undertook a substantial renovation in 2015. The project initially focused on replacing fairway and green turf across approximately thirty acres. It subsequently expanded to include architectural changes.
Bill Coore visited the property twice during the project, spending eight days reviewing and advising on the work. Additional members of the Coore and Crenshaw team participated during construction. The changes included new forward tees on eight holes, replacing a waste bunker at the fifth with four formal bunkers, and reconstructing bunkers on seven holes using the Better Billy Bunker method.
Work began in April 2015 and the course reopened on 4 September.
The 2015 renovation attracted coverage in Golf Course Architecture and was reported by the American Society of Golf Course Architects. The project was notable for involving the original architect in changes intended to reinforce the course's initial design principles.
Chechessee Creek Club remains a private golf club in Okatie. The present layout incorporates the original Coore and Crenshaw design and the alterations completed in 2015.
