Origins

The institution was founded in 1922. Its present course at Punta Carretas was designed by Alister MacKenzie, whose work in Uruguay came during the same period as his major international commissions. The club's own current course page dates the inauguration to May 1934.

Did You Know?
The golf course and its park have national historic-monument status.

Design Philosophy

The surviving MacKenzie routing uses broad, bunker-defended greens and tree-lined fairways, with several holes constrained by out-of-bounds. Its coastal urban setting distinguishes it from many of MacKenzie's inland projects.

Development

The course became an established part of the Punta Carretas landscape and the wider property later received formal historic protection.

Today

Club de Golf del Uruguay remains an active private sporting institution with an 18-hole par-73 course and a substantial tournament programme.
