Origins

The course grew directly out of the Newman family's agricultural property above Wotton-under-Edge. Land that was difficult to use effectively for grazing was converted to golf, and the family founded Cotswold Edge Golf Club in 1980. The course was formally opened by Anthony Kershaw MP on 9 February 1980.

Did You Know?
The club was created because part of the Newman family's farmland was considered too hilly for grazing.

Development

A formal exhibition match was staged on 31 May 1981 to mark the new club, featuring boxer Sir Henry Cooper, cricketer Tom Graveney, Ryder Cup golfer Brian Huggett and club professional Ian Watts. Over subsequent decades the course matured while remaining in Newman family ownership.

Today

Cotswold Edge remains a privately family-owned 18-hole club that welcomes visitors, societies and members. Its course is split between a more open front nine and a shorter back nine on the higher ground of the Cotswold escarpment.
