Origins

Six Dinas Powys residents met at The Rise on 20 September 1912 to begin forming a golf club. The availability of 38 acres at Highwalls Farm provided the practical opportunity. By late 1913 the proposal had attracted 150 gentlemen and 50 ladies, and the club took possession of the fields on 2 February 1914.

Did You Know?
Before the club even possessed the land, its committee had already bought a second-hand mower, a horse and harness for course construction.

Design Philosophy

The committee hired Willie Park, Jr to advise on the original design, but the official club history says first professional and groundsman Harry Prosser was perhaps the greater practical force in laying out the nine holes. The compact modern course continues to place greater emphasis on distance control and accurate iron play than raw length.

Development

The nine-hole course formally opened on 2 May 1914. During both World Wars some fairways were converted to potato production. In 1921 a further nine holes were created with assistance from James Braid, establishing the 18-hole course.

Recognition

The club's early competitive history includes E. R. Tipple reaching the semi-final of the English Amateur Championship in 1928.

Today

Dinas Powys remains a member club with regular visitor and society access and year-round play supported by naturally free-draining ground.
