About Fortune Hills Golf Course

Fortune Hills Golf & Country Club is a nine-hole course in Freeport on Grand Bahama. The layout was designed by Dick Wilson and Joe Lee and constructed around 1971, with golf directories generally giving 1972 as its opening year. The physical nine measures 3,458 yards and plays to par 36; it can be played twice using tee variations to produce an 18-hole round.

Historical descriptions note that Fortune Hills was originally intended to become an 18-hole facility, but the second nine was never built. Wilson and Lee used raised tees and large, heavily bunkered elevated greens, and an older Bahamas course history records 43 bunkers across the nine holes. The third, a 400-yard par four, is identified in that source as the number-one handicap hole and the only hole with water.

The course is a 9-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 36, 3,162m (3,458 yards), slope rating 125. Designed by Dick Wilson and Joe Lee, the course originally opened in 1972. It is open to the public.

Origins

Fortune Hills was created during the early development of Freeport as a resort and residential centre. Bahamasnet records the course as built in 1971, while golf directories generally list a 1972 opening. Dick Wilson and Joe Lee, who were also working on Grand Bahama golf projects in the same era, designed the nine-hole layout.

Did You Know?
The course has enough land for a second nine, but the planned expansion was never completed.

Design Philosophy

Wilson and Lee used large elevated greens, raised tees and extensive bunkering. A detailed historical description counts 43 bunkers on the nine holes. The course's 3,458-yard length makes it substantial for nine holes, and playing the circuit twice produces a round of nearly 7,000 yards.

Development

Fortune Hills was originally intended to have 18 holes. The property retained sufficient land for another nine, but long-time owner Walter Kitchen stated in an historical interview that there were no immediate plans to expand. The course therefore remained a nine-hole facility.

Today

The Bahamas Golf Federation continues to list Fortune Hills Golf & Country Club as a nine-hole Grand Bahama course. It publishes a general BSD 83 course rate. The course has historically combined a local membership base with access for transient and visiting golfers.
