Joe Lee (1922–2003) was a deeply respected American golf course architect known for his prolific five-decade career, predominantly in Florida and the Southeast. S.
Navy during World War II before earning a degree from the University of Miami. Early in his career, he worked under Dick Wilson and contributed to renowned courses like Doral’s Blue Monster, Bay Hill, LaCosta, Cog Hill, and Warwick Hills; after Wilson’s death in 1965, Lee carried on the firm’s legacy and established his own distinguished portfolio.
He designed over 200 courses globally, emphasizing fairness, strategic bunkering, large contoured greens, and multiple shot options to make play enjoyable for golfers of all levels. Among his notable works are the Walt Disney World Resort’s original championship courses, such as Magnolia and Palm.
