Golf Course Architect
Louis Sibbett “Dick” Wilson (1904–1965), born in Philadelphia, rose from water boy at Merion to apprentice under Toomey and Flynn before establishing his own firm after WWII. He became prominent in the 1950s and early ’60s, shaping dozens of courses, particularly in Florida, and is remembered for elevating greens and using bold bunkering and water features to emphasize aerial approaches.
Wilson’s hallmark style involved slightly raised greens and tees for visibility and drainage, curvelinear bunkers guarding diagonally set greens, and strategic use of artificial lakes to create challenge and fill terrain. Among his notable works are municipal gems like Palm Beach Par 3 (1961, with Joe Lee) and Miami’s Palmetto Golf Course (1959), both showcasing his classic architectural signature in flat tropical landscapes.
