Origins

The course was developed in Playacar during the early growth of golf tourism on the Riviera Maya. A historical club fact sheet identifies September 1994 as its opening month and Robert von Hagge as its architect. It originally operated as The Golf Club at Playacar, establishing a full-length championship course close to central Playa del Carmen before the region developed the much larger collection of resort courses it has today.

The course predates the Hard Rock branding and originally operated as The Golf Club at Playacar.

Design Philosophy

Von Hagge's routing is a full-length par-72 layout with five sets of tees and substantial differences in playing distance, from 5,176 yards at the Red tees to 7,136 yards from the Black tees. Hard Rock's material describes the course in terms of risk-and-reward decisions and identifies the fourth and eighteenth as designated signature holes. Bermuda-family grasses are used on both fairways and greens.

Development

The most visible change in the course's identity has been branding rather than a documented wholesale redesign. The former Golf Club at Playacar became Hard Rock Golf Club Riviera Maya while retaining the Robert von Hagge course. Hard Rock continues to market it in conjunction with Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya.

Recognition

Hard Rock states that the club received a Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence. The course is also historically significant within the Riviera Maya golf market because its 1994 opening predates many of the destination's later resort layouts.

Today

The club continues as an 18-hole course in Playacar with a clubhouse, golf shop, food service and a practice complex incorporating a driving range, chipping area, putting greens and practice bunker.
