Huntingdale Golf Club is an 18-hole private club in Oakleigh South within Melbourne's Sandbelt. The present course opened in 1941 after the club acquired the former Melbourne Hunt Club grounds. Huntingdale's official history states that the design was entrusted to English golf architect C.
H. Alison, who worked from models, contour plans and written information rather than visiting the site; former curator Sam Beriman adapted Alison's plans to the terrain. Huntingdale became internationally recognised through the Australian Masters, first staging the tournament in 1979 and hosting it repeatedly for three decades.
The course is an 18-hole sandbelt golf course. Designed by Sam Berriman and Charles H. Alison, the course originally opened in 1941. It is a private members' club. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Pro Shop, Practice Facilities.
Huntingdale's lineage reaches back to Surrey Hills Golf Club, established in 1896. After the First World War, former members regrouped and a succession of clubs and sites eventually led to the acquisition of the old Melbourne Hunt Club grounds at East Oakleigh. The move placed the club on Melbourne's celebrated Sandbelt.
The new course opened in 1941 and the Huntingdale Golf Club name was adopted.
The club entrusted the design to English architect C. H. Alison.
Because Alison worked remotely, former curator Sam Beriman was brought in to adapt the architect's plans to the terrain. The result became part of the group of firm, strategically bunkered courses for which Melbourne's Sandbelt is known.
Huntingdale's profile rose sharply when it hosted the Australian Masters beginning in 1979. In 2008 it celebrated its 30th year associated with the tournament. A new A$12 million clubhouse was completed in August 2014, together with car-park and golf-shop works.
Its repeated Australian Masters role brought many of the game's leading players to Huntingdale, including Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer and Tiger Woods.
Huntingdale remains a private Melbourne Sandbelt club and championship venue.
