Ilkley Golf Club occupies an 18-hole, par-69 parkland course beside the River Wharfe. The club itself was established in June 1890 with an original nine-hole course on Rombald's Moor, but it moved to the present riverside ground after securing land from the Myddleton Estate in 1897; work on the new course began in February 1898 and was completed that July. The current White scorecard measures 6,262 yards, with a published rating of 70.2 and slope of 119.
The first seven holes run close to the River Wharfe, making the river an important feature of the early routing. Ilkley's design history is associated with several major architects, including Harry Colt, Alister MacKenzie and James Braid, who contributed alterations over the course's development. The club also has strong links to notable players: Harry Vardon won his first professional prize at Ilkley, while Colin Montgomerie developed his game there as a junior.

Ilkley Golf Club began in June 1890 with a nine-hole course on Rombald's Moor. Ben Hirst and Alfred Potter were central to the initiative, with advice from George Strath and practical laying-out work by professional George Kay. The club's first site was short-lived as its principal home: in October 1897 the committee negotiated with the Myddleton Estate for about 70 acres of pasture beside the River Wharfe.
Work on the new course began in February 1898 and was completed that July.
The present course developed over decades rather than emerging from a single immutable plan. Harry Colt, Alister MacKenzie and James Braid are all associated with later design work and alterations. The River Wharfe strongly influences the opening stretch, while the compact routing relies on positioning, bunkering and greens rather than modern championship-scale length.
The move from Rombald's Moor to the Wharfe-side property established the course on the ground it occupies today. Subsequent architectural work by prominent designers refined the layout, while tree planting in the twentieth century changed its appearance. The club's long professional tradition included Tom Vardon and later Bill Ferguson, under whom Colin Montgomerie developed as a young golfer.
Ilkley's historical standing is tied both to its age and to the players associated with it. Harry Vardon earned his first professional prize there, and later members included prominent Ryder Cup figures such as Colin Montgomerie and Mark James. The club has also hosted significant county and national amateur events.
Ilkley remains an 18-hole parkland members' club with visitor access. Its White course measures 6,262 yards and par 69, with the River Wharfe still defining much of the character of the opening holes.
