About Jasper Park Lodge Golf Club

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-71 Stanley Thompson course in Jasper National Park, Alberta. The course opened on July 17, 1925 and measures approximately 6,663 yards from its longest traditional published configuration. Thompson routed the course through the natural contours of the Athabasca Valley, using mountain sightlines, irregular bunkering and the existing terrain as major elements of the design.

The property is part of Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and operates as a resort course open to visiting golfers. A restoration program begun in 1994 used Thompson's original 1924 plans to restore bunkers and teeing grounds. Following the 2024 Jasper wildfire and subsequent recovery work, the course reopened on July 1, 2025 for its centennial season.

The course is an 18-hole resort golf course. It plays to par 71, 6,093m (6,663 yards). Designed by Stanley Thompson, the course originally opened in 1925. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving range, Golf pro shop, Clubhouse, Golf simulator, Terrace.

Origins

Jasper Park Lodge's golf course was developed during the expansion of Canadian National Railway's resort operations in Jasper. Stanley Thompson was commissioned to create an 18-hole mountain course, and contemporary reporting records roughly 200 workers helping carve the layout through the valley landscape. Field Marshal Earl Haig officially opened the completed course on July 17, 1925.

Design Philosophy

Thompson worked with the natural contours rather than imposing a geometric layout on the site. The routing aligns holes with prominent mountain peaks, while elevated tees, broad fairways and large, irregular bunkers use both the terrain and distant scenery as part of the composition. His bunkering frequently creates diagonal lines of play rather than simply guarding greens.

Development

In 1994 Fairmont initiated a restoration intended to return the course toward Thompson's original design. Thompson's 1924 blueprints were used, with particular attention paid to restoring bunkers and tee boxes. After the 2024 Jasper wildfire disrupted resort operations, additional recovery work included tree removal to reopen historic sightlines and resurfacing selected greens.

The course reopened on July 1, 2025.

Recognition

The course has repeatedly appeared in Canadian and international rankings. SCOREGolf named it Canada's #1 Public Golf Course in 2013 and for many years ranked Jasper Park Lodge as Canada's leading golf resort. Golf Digest has also included Jasper in its international rankings.

Today

The course remains part of Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and operates seasonally in Jasper National Park. Its centennial was celebrated in 2025, and the 2026 season was scheduled to conclude on October 11.
