Panther Creek Country Club is a private championship golf course on the southwest side of Springfield, Illinois, designed by three-time U.S. Open champion Hale Irwin and opened in 1992. Billed by the club as Springfield's leading family club, it pairs a competitive, tournament-caliber layout with a full slate of social and athletic programs for members of all ages.
The course plays to a par of 72 across five tees, from 5,496 yards at the forward Red markers to a demanding 7,244 yards from the Gold tips (course rating 74.2, slope 132) — length that has made it a natural fit for professional competition. Panther Creek hosted the LPGA's State Farm Classic from 2007 to 2011, and since 2016 has been the home of the Memorial Health Championship, a PGA Tour-sanctioned Korn Ferry Tour event, giving Springfield an annual look at the game's rising professionals.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 7,244 yards, course rating 74.2 and slope rating 132. Designed by Hale Irwin and Rick Phelps, the course originally opened in 1992. It is a private members' club. On-site facilities include Social Membership, Junior Membership, Corporate Membership, Restaurant, Bar / 19th Hole.
Few private clubs in central Illinois can claim the tournament pedigree of Panther Creek Country Club. The course opened for play on June 6, 1992, on Springfield's growing southwest side, built from the outset to a championship standard rather than as a straightforward members' track.
The design work fell to Hale Irwin, the three-time U.S. Open champion, working alongside Colorado architect Rick Phelps, who later served as president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. Between them they routed a genuinely demanding test: five sets of tees ranging up to 7,244 yards from the back markers, with a course rating of 74.2 and a slope of 132 — numbers well above what most private clubs in the region ask of their members.
That difficulty made Panther Creek a natural fit for professional golf. The club hosted the LPGA's State Farm Classic from 2007 to 2011, then in 2016 became home to the Memorial Health Championship, a Korn Ferry Tour event sanctioned by the PGA Tour. The tournament has returned to Panther Creek every year since, reaching its tenth consecutive playing in 2025.
Despite the course's length and rating, tour pros have found it scoreable: the event's 18-hole course record stands at 60, and the 72-hole tournament record is 27-under 257. For the players competing, the stakes are real — a top-20 finish on the Korn Ferry Tour's season points list earns a PGA Tour card for the following year, so real careers have turned on rounds played here.
