About Paradise Island Golf Course

Paradise Island Golf Course was the predecessor of today's Ocean Club Golf Course on Paradise Island. Dick Wilson designed the original course in 1958, routing it along the Atlantic Ocean and Nassau Harbour. Historical descriptions give the layout as an 18-hole, par-72 course of approximately 6,776 yards, with numerous bunkers and water or ocean affecting many holes.

The course survived for roughly four decades before a comprehensive redevelopment at the end of the 1990s. Resort owner Sun International reported completing the redevelopment during 2000, with Tom Weiskopf responsible for the new championship design and a new clubhouse built as part of the project. Contemporary Bahamas golf history describes the work as a complete rebuilding rather than a modest renovation.

The course is an 18-hole resort golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,196m (6,776 yards). Designed by Dick Wilson, the course originally opened in 1958.

Origins

Dick Wilson put his design stamp on Paradise Island in 1958, creating a golf course along the island's Atlantic and Nassau Harbour shorelines. Historical accounts describe five lakes, extensive sand hazards and the Atlantic Ocean itself as integral elements of the site.

The original course was completely rebuilt rather than simply renamed.

Design Philosophy

Wilson used the coastal setting as a principal defence. Historical course information describes water or ocean affecting 11 holes and a very large number of bunkers, producing a resort course whose difficulty was tied closely to hazards and its exposed island setting.

Development

By the late 1990s the property was selected for comprehensive redevelopment. Sun International's corporate filings state that redevelopment of the Paradise Island Golf Course was completed during 2000 and included a new clubhouse. Tom Weiskopf directed the golf work, and Bahamas golf history characterises it as a complete rebuilding of the roughly 300-acre course.

Today

The original Paradise Island Golf Course no longer exists as an independent layout. Its successor is the Ocean Club Golf Course, which reopened in December 2000 as a Tom Weiskopf-designed par-72 course. Current Ocean Club information should therefore be maintained separately from this historical Dick Wilson record.
