Pasatiempo Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-70 Alister MacKenzie course in Santa Cruz, California. Marion Hollins developed the property and hired MacKenzie after their work together at Cypress Point. The course officially opened on September 8, 1929, when Hollins played the opening round with Bobby Jones, Glenna Collett and Cyril Tolley before more than 2,000 spectators.
The current official rating table lists the Gold tees at 6,486 yards with a 72.5 course rating and 141 slope. Although Pasatiempo has a membership structure, public tee times are sold, making access semi-private rather than members-only. From 2023 through 2024, architect Jim Urbina led a major restoration of the greens, bunkers and surrounds, returning contours toward MacKenzie's 1929 design while adding modern drainage.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 70, 6,486 yards, course rating 72.5 and slope rating 141. Designed by Alister MacKenzie, the course originally opened in 1929. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Pro Shop, Driving Range, Practice Facilities, Golf Lessons, Restaurant, Bar, Terrace.
Marion Hollins announced plans in January 1928 for a sporting and residential development in the hills above Santa Cruz. Having already worked with Alister MacKenzie at Cypress Point, she hired him to design the golf course. Pasatiempo officially opened on September 8, 1929, with Hollins, Bobby Jones, Glenna Collett and Cyril Tolley in the first group.
MacKenzie used the site's rolling sandy hills and elevation changes to create strategic angles, deceptive bunkering and strongly contoured greens. Pasatiempo became an important demonstration of ideas he later carried into other projects.
The course retained its original push-up greens for more than nine decades. Between 2023 and 2024, Jim Urbina directed a major restoration of greens, bunkers and surrounds, along with drainage and selected fairway improvements. All 18 holes reopened on December 1, 2024.
Pasatiempo has remained prominent in American course rankings and has hosted USGA championships. Its relationship to Hollins, MacKenzie and Bobby Jones also gives it an important place in the development story of Augusta National.
The restored course combines a member club with public tee-time access and continues to operate on its original Santa Cruz property.
