The West Course at Powerscourt Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland layout on Powerscourt Estate in County Wicklow. Designed by David McLay Kidd, it opened in 2003 after Kidd had established his international reputation with Bandon Dunes. Powerscourt describes the West as a large-scale parkland routing with approximately 80 feet of elevation change, substantial greens and pronounced bunkering.
Powerscourt Hotel lists the championship course at 6,345 metres and confirms the 2003 opening date. The West is distinct from Powerscourt's East Course, which was designed by Peter McEvoy. Both courses share the estate's clubhouse and practice infrastructure.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,345m. Designed by David McLay Kidd, the course originally opened in 2003. It is open to the public. Powerscourt already had its Peter McEvoy-designed East Course when the estate commissioned a second layout from Scottish architect David McLay Kidd. Kidd had recently gained international attention through Bandon Dunes in Oregon. His Powerscourt project became the estate's West Course and opened in 2003.
The West occupies ground in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains and was conceived as a broad-scale parkland course rather than a copy of its older sister layout. Powerscourt describes large, carefully shaped greens, extensive bunkering and about 80 feet of elevation change. Contemporary and later commentary on the course emphasizes its more open character and use of the site's rolling ground.
The addition of the West transformed Powerscourt into a 36-hole golf property. The two layouts remain separate courses by different architects but share the main clubhouse and practice facilities.
The West has received substantial Irish golf-media coverage, including comparisons with the East Course and recognition of Kidd's routing and use of the estate's terrain.
The West remains one of two 18-hole courses at Powerscourt Golf Club. It accepts visitor bookings and shares practice, retail and hospitality facilities with the East Course.
