Presidio Golf Course is an 18-hole public golf course inside San Francisco's Presidio. It began in 1895 as a nine-hole military-post course after Presidio commander Colonel William M. Graham allowed members of the San Francisco Golf and Country Club to establish golf on the site.
Robert Wood Johnstone designed the original course. Johnstone and William McEwan expanded it to 18 holes in 1910, and the British firm Fowler & Simpson later enlarged and redesigned the course around 1920-21. The current official scorecard lists a 6,481-yard Black course, while older scorecards used a 6,422-yard Blue championship configuration.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,481 yards. Designed by Robert Wood Johnstone, the course originally opened in 1895. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Green, Chipping Area, Pro Shop, Golf Lessons, Club Fitting, Restaurant, Bar.
The course began in 1895 after Presidio commander Colonel William M. Graham permitted a group of San Francisco businessmen to create a nine-hole course on the military reservation. Robert Wood Johnstone produced the original layout.
The present course evolved through repeated adaptation to the Presidio's hilly terrain. Tree-lined corridors, elevation change and compact landing areas now define its parkland character.
The course expanded to 18 holes in 1910 through work by Johnstone and William McEwan. Fowler & Simpson enlarged and redesigned it around 1920-21 and installed a watering system. A Presidio Trust environmental history also records substantial remodeling into the modern configuration during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The course opened to the general public in 1995 and received a new public clubhouse in 1999.
The golf course is a contributing feature of the Presidio's National Historic Landmark District.
Presidio Golf Course operates as a daily-fee public course within the Presidio national park site, with green-fee revenue helping support park operations.
