About Prestbury Golf Club

Prestbury Golf Club is a private members' club in Cheshire with an 18-hole, par-71 course created during the early 1920s. The club was founded in 1920 as Prestbury and Upton Golf Club. Its own history records that Harry Colt and Dr Alister MacKenzie were responsible for the design, with the first nine holes opening on Easter Sunday, March 26, 1921, and all 18 holes officially open by 1924.

The routing uses substantial changes in elevation on a comparatively compact property, while sandy subsoil contributes to drainage. Colt continued advising the club into the 1930s. John Morrison later became involved, and Fred Hawtree and Sons were appointed as course architects in 1959.

Origins

Prestbury and Upton Golf Club was founded in February 1920 by local golfers seeking an 18-hole course on less strenuous terrain than alternatives in the district. Work began that summer. A contemporary Manchester Guardian report recorded that Harry Colt and Alister MacKenzie were responsible for the design.

Did You Know?
Only nine holes were ready when Prestbury first opened for play in March 1921; the complete 18 followed by 1924.

Design Philosophy

The course uses the property's natural changes in elevation and sandy ground. Prestbury's history records Colt's preference for working with natural landforms and avoiding artificial-looking symmetry. The back nine wraps around the front in a horseshoe-like routing on a site of roughly 90 acres.

Development

Nine holes opened on March 26, 1921 and all 18 were officially open by 1924. Colt continued to advise the club into the 1930s. John Morrison later handled architectural matters before Fred Hawtree and Sons were appointed in 1959.

Mackenzie & Ebert became course architects in 2016.

Recognition

Prestbury has appeared in rankings of England's leading courses and has hosted national and county competition as well as Open Championship Regional Qualifying.

Today
