Remuera Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 golf course at Abbotts Way in central Auckland. Established in 1934, the course occupies a substantial woodland reserve and operates as a members' club that also accepts public visitor bookings. The current Blue men's championship markers measure 6,200 metres, with a Golf New Zealand course rating of 72.7 and slope of 131.
The layout has changed considerably over its history. Harold Babbage is credited as a course designer by Golf New Zealand's Discover Golf directory, while later redevelopment has involved Canadian architect Grant Puddicombe. The course is characterised by mature vegetation and a parkland setting rather than links terrain.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,200m, course rating 72.7 and slope rating 131. Designed by Harold Babbage, the course originally opened in 1934. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Toptracer, Chipping Area, Practice Area, Golf Shop, Golf Lessons, Club Fitting, Club Hire, and 13 more.
S. Ralph put the property to golfing use and fairways were formed through what had been rough scrub and bush. The development was unusual in that two golf courses emerged on the property within a relatively short period: one operated as a public facility and the other as a members' club.
Remuera Golf Club continues to use 1934 as its establishment year. The present property is now described by the club as a woodland park reserve covering roughly 72 hectares in central Auckland.
There is no single architect responsible for the layout golfers see today. By the mid-1970s the property had been consolidated into one course, with fairways arranged by the Auckland architectural firm JASMAD. When that routing was subsequently considered too constricted, local golf-course designer Harold Babbage was engaged to remodel it.
Golf New Zealand's Discover Golf directory consequently lists Babbage as Remuera's designer. Further changes in the twenty-first century have continued the emphasis on strategic redevelopment rather than wholesale replacement of the course.
A major later phase began in 2004, when Remuera commissioned Canadian architect Grant Puddicombe to prepare a master plan and strategic redevelopment plan. Puddicombe described an extensive programme that included reconstruction of holes 1 through 4 and 16 through 18, together with work on the practice area, with further holes intended to be tackled progressively while the course remained in play. That relationship continued for years.
In 2019 the club documented another Puddicombe-led project in which bunkers were reshaped and renovated, several were reduced in size and four bunkers were removed. Alongside the course work, Remuera has invested heavily in practice infrastructure, including Toptracer-equipped ranges and a two-storey, climate-controlled range facility.
Remuera has developed a role beyond that of a local members' club. Golf New Zealand, Auckland Golf and the New Zealand PGA have established their headquarters at the property. The club also places considerable emphasis on environmental management: it states that Remuera was the first golf course in New Zealand, and remains one of only a small number, to achieve full GEO certification for sustainable golf-course practices.
The club remains a private membership organisation while allowing members' guests, visitors and tourists to book rounds online. Its main course is an 18-hole par-72 layout surrounded by mature vegetation in central Auckland. Current facilities include extensive practice areas, PGA coaching, club fitting, equipment hire, golf carts, a Golf Shop, changing facilities and substantial hospitality spaces.
The combination of a long-established club, public visitor access and the presence of New Zealand's principal national and regional golf organisations makes Remuera an important centre for the sport in Auckland.
