Waitematā Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-70 parkland course in Devonport on Auckland's North Shore. Founded in 1905, the club occupies a notably flat site between the Devonport and Narrow Neck areas, with mature trees, shrubs and water features throughout the property. The longest current men's marker set, Achilles, measures 5,538 metres and is listed independently with a course rating of 69.3 and slope of 118.
The layout is comparatively compact, with four par threes and two par fives, placing an emphasis on accuracy rather than length. The club's own description highlights narrow, tree-lined fairways and short-to-medium-length holes. Visitors can book tee times directly and published rates cover members' guests, affiliated golfers and non-affiliated golfers for both nine and 18 holes.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 70, 5,538m, course rating 69.3 and slope rating 118. The course originally opened in 1905. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Pro Shop, Golf Lessons, Putting Green, Club Hire, Trundler Hire, Golf Cart Rental, Full Membership, Social Membership, and 6 more.
The club's beginnings are tied closely to early twentieth-century Devonport and one of the North Shore's most prominent civic figures. Waitematā Golf Club was founded in 1905, and the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography identifies businessman and politician Ewen William Alison as both a founder and the club's first president. Alison was deeply involved in the development of Devonport and the wider North Shore through local government, shipping and transport, while also supporting several sporting organisations.
The club consequently emerged during a period when Devonport was developing rapidly as both a residential and recreational centre.
No named architect for the present course could be verified from the club, Golf New Zealand or the independent sources checked during this pass. The physical character of the layout is nevertheless clearly documented by the club. It is an unusually flat Auckland course, arranged through established parkland with mature trees, shrubs and water features.
The course is relatively short by modern standards and uses narrow tree-lined fairways and a sequence of short-to-medium-length holes to place greater emphasis on accuracy than outright distance.
Waitematā has remained on its Devonport site while developing from an early North Shore golf club into a heavily used urban course with 18 holes and multiple rated marker sets. Its current handicapping setup includes Achilles, Royalist, Leander and other marker configurations, allowing competitions to be played from different starting tees under the World Handicap System. The clubhouse has also been renovated, with lounge, dining and outdoor deck areas serving golfers, members and functions.
The club received national recognition in 2019 when it was named Club of the Year at the New Zealand Golf Awards. Waitematā states that the award considered innovation, inclusion, community impact, club growth and the use of New Zealand Golf initiatives. The club also describes itself as a breeding ground for champion golfers and notes that it has produced national champions.
Waitematā remains a membership-based club but actively accommodates visitors, affiliated golfers and non-affiliated players, with public tee-time booking and published nine- and 18-hole green fees. Golf New Zealand lists the club as an 18-hole facility, while the club's own site describes the course as open enough that non-playing members of the public may walk through it. Current facilities include a Pro Shop, coaching, equipment and cart hire, a practice putting green, café and kitchen, bar, dining areas and function space.
