The Royal Dublin Golf Club occupies an 18-hole links on North Bull Island in Dublin Bay. The club was founded in 1885, but the course's present architectural lineage is principally associated with Harry Colt and Martin Hawtree. Military use during the First World War left the earlier links badly damaged.
After the military departed, the club used compensation funds to reconstruct its clubhouse and commissioned Colt to redesign the links in 1920. In the early 2000s Martin Hawtree was engaged to update the course for the modern game while respecting Colt's work; that project was completed in 2006 and produced a 7,269-yard, par-72 layout. Royal Dublin has an extensive championship history and has hosted the Irish Amateur Open Championship a record 29 times.
The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,648m (7,269 yards). The course was designed by Harry Colt. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Pro Shop, Practice Range, Restaurant, Terrace.
The club dates to 1885 and established its home on North Bull Island. Its history was interrupted during the First World War when the military took over the course from 1914 to 1919 and used the land as a rifle and artillery range.
After wartime use left the links badly damaged, Harry Colt was commissioned to redesign it in 1920. Colt altered the routing and elevated several tees, including at the fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth, to take advantage of views over Dublin Bay.
In the early 2000s the club commissioned Martin Hawtree to modernise the course for contemporary equipment and tournament golf without discarding Colt's underlying architecture. Hawtree's work was completed in 2006, creating the present 7,269-yard par-72 configuration.
Royal Dublin has played a major role in Irish championship golf, particularly through its repeated staging of the Irish Amateur Open.
The course remains a championship links on the protected Bull Island landscape, with member play and controlled visitor access.
