Southerndown's first course was designed by Willie Fernie, then professional at Glamorganshire Golf Club. While construction proceeded, members used a temporary five-hole course from autumn 1905 and a professional's shed served as a makeshift clubhouse.
The course is the product of several distinct architectural stages rather than a single design campaign. Fernie's initial routing was followed by alterations from Herbert Fowler in 1907-08, Willie Park Jr. in 1913-14 and Harry Colt in 1919-20.
Successive changes during the club's first two decades established the routing and architectural character associated with Southerndown today.
Southerndown remains an 18-hole par-70 course with online visitor tee-time booking.
