The Carnoustie Buddon Course is an 18-hole, par-68 public course at Carnoustie Golf Links in Angus, Scotland. Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas drew up plans for Carnoustie's third course in the 1970s, and the Buddon opened for play in 1981 on land that included parts of the former ladies' course and neighbouring Ministry of Defence ground. Its military connection is reflected in every hole name, from Alma and Corunna through to Cassino, Tobruk and Rhine.
The current White course measures 5,921 yards and carries a course rating of 69.0 and slope of 120. The layout combines exposed links ground at the beginning and end of the round with tree-lined sections, lakes, heathland and wetlands through its middle. A major Mackenzie & Ebert redesign was completed in 2014 after development of Carnoustie's Golf Centre affected the original opening hole.
The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 68, 5,414m (5,921 yards), course rating 69 and slope rating 120. Designed by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas, the course originally opened in 1981. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Junior Membership, Pro Shop, Driving Range, Putting Green, Chipping Area, Practice Bunker, Caddie Service, Club Hire, and 8 more.
The Buddon grew from Carnoustie's desire for a third 18-hole course alongside the Championship and Burnside. Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas, both former Ryder Cup players who later became established course designers, drew up plans in 1974. The layout used land that had previously formed part of the ladies' course together with ground beside the Ministry of Defence training area.
That military setting became part of the course's identity: every hole was given the name of a battle, including Alma, Ypres, El Alamein, Waterloo and Cassino. Carnoustie's official heritage timeline records that the completed Buddon opened for play as an 18-hole course in 1981.
The original Alliss-Thomas routing was deliberately different from Carnoustie's two older courses. Its opening and closing stretches use more recognisable links terrain, while the middle section moves through tree-lined ground with lakes, heather and wetlands. The result is a course where exposed coastal conditions, woodland corridors and water all influence play.
The present official descriptions repeatedly emphasise accuracy rather than length: water closely defends several fairways and greens, while pot bunkers, ditches, rough and heather penalise missed lines. The military battle names provide continuity across otherwise varied terrain.
The most significant transformation followed construction of Carnoustie's Golf Centre, which occupied land affecting the original opening hole. Mackenzie & Ebert was appointed to advise on the redesign. The original first hole was removed, while the former ninth and tenth holes were combined into a new par-5 ninth.
Two entirely new par fours were built farther into the property; these became today's 11th, The Hook, and 12th, St Valery. Contemporary reporting says the project also incorporated new wetland, pond and heathland habitat. The revised layout officially opened for the 2014 season, increasing the course from its interim 5,420-yard, par-65 configuration to a par of 68.

Although the Buddon does not have the major-championship history of Carnoustie's Championship Course, it forms an important part of the wider Links and has been used for organised events. In 2015 all three Carnoustie courses were used for the tenth anniversary of the World Hickory Open, bringing competitors from multiple countries to the property. Its 2014 redevelopment also attracted specialist golf-architecture coverage because Mackenzie & Ebert used the course reconfiguration to combine golf changes with new ecological habitat.
The Buddon remains the newest of Carnoustie's three 18-hole courses and is available for public visitor play through the same booking system as the Championship and Burnside. The current White course measures 5,921 yards at par 68, with additional Yellow, Green and Black tees and separate women's ratings. Carnoustie keeps the Buddon and Burnside available through the winter, although temporary routing changes, shortened holes and fairway mats can apply.
Visitors also have access to the wider Carnoustie facilities, including practice areas, professional instruction, equipment hire, Links House, the Professional Shop and dining at The Rookery.
