The Coast Golf Club occupies an oceanfront site around Little Bay in Sydney's south-east. Its present course is an 18-hole, par-70 links-style layout exposed to changing coastal winds, with views of the Pacific from every hole. Golf on the site predates the club: Prince Henry Hospital maintained golf holes for staff recreation from about 1922.
Hospital and University of New South Wales employees formed the club in the early 1960s, and the Coast Golf & Recreation Club was officially opened in May 1965. Volunteer labour helped expand and restore the course, which became a full 18-hole layout by the early 1970s. Residential redevelopment of the former hospital site led to changes to the 7th and 10th holes in the early 2000s and produced the current par-70 routing.
The course is an 18-hole links golf course. The course originally opened in 1965. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Pro Shop, Restaurant, Bar, Electric Cart Hire, Club Hire, Function Facilities.
The site began as part of the Coast Hospital, later Prince Henry Hospital. Golf holes existed there from about 1922 as a recreation facility for hospital staff, including employees who sometimes spent extended periods in isolation or voluntary quarantine. By the early 1960s Sir Harold Dickinson and the hospital board supported reviving the deteriorated course as a staff amenity and as a means of preserving the Little Bay foreshore as open space.
Former hospital and university employees formed the club, which was officially opened in May 1965 by Sir John Marks, chairman of the Prince Henry Hospital board.
Members contributed substantial volunteer labour to rehabilitate land and develop the small earlier layout. The course reached 18 holes by the early 1970s. After Prince Henry Hospital closed and the surrounding land was redeveloped for housing, the golf course passed through Landcom and later Crown Lands, with the club receiving a long-term lease.
Residential development required redesign work, particularly to the 7th and 10th holes, in the early 2000s. More recent works have included drainage and cart-path improvements, new greens at the 9th and 13th, establishment of a bentgrass nursery in 2014 and a major irrigation-system replacement completed in 2019.
The course is an 18-hole par-70 layout surrounding Little Bay. Public play is available seven days a week outside member competition periods, while the heritage clubhouse occupies the former hospital laundry building.
