The Courses at Watters Creek is a City of Allen municipal golf facility at 7201 Chase Oaks Boulevard in Plano, Texas. It contains three separate layouts totaling 33 holes: the 18-hole, par-72 Traditions Course; the 9-hole, par-30 Players Course with six par 3s and three par 4s; and the 6-hole Futures Course, where holes range from roughly 40 to 110 yards. The property originated as Chase Oaks Golf Club, opened in 1986 with courses designed by Robert von Hagge and Bruce Devlin.
A. Weibring and Steve Wolfard reshaped the facility into its present form. The championship Traditions Course now measures 7,015 yards from the Black tees, with a rating of 74.4 and slope of 136.
Designed by Robert Von Hagge and Bruce Devlin, the course originally opened in 1986. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Green, Short Game Practice Area, Chipping Greens, Practice Bunkers, Golf Lessons, Junior Golf Program, Club Fitting, and 8 more.
The property predates the Watters Creek name by more than two decades. It began as Chase Oaks Golf Club, a 27-hole public facility whose 18-hole Blackjack and nine-hole Sawtooth layouts were designed by Robert von Hagge and former tour professional Bruce Devlin. Contemporary industry reporting and the Texas Golf Association place the opening in 1986.
Chase Oaks earned a strong regional reputation; contemporary sources record the Blackjack Course reaching the top of the Dallas Morning News public-course ranking in Texas around 1990-1991. By the early 2000s, however, the property had suffered maintenance and financial problems and was offered for sale. The City of Allen pursued acquisition as a way to provide residents with a municipal golf facility rather than constructing a new course from scratch.
The modern identity of Watters Creek comes from the Weibring-Wolfard redesign. Their stated objective was not simply to rebuild a championship course, but to create three distinct forms of golf for different abilities and available playing time. On the Traditions Course they retained useful elements of the old Chase Oaks layout while changing holes that had become awkward or overly severe.
The routing was reversed, tree corridors were pruned and opened, nine lakes were dredged and reshaped, bunkers were rebuilt with visually prominent white sand, and multiple teeing angles were created so golfers could select an appropriate challenge. The designers specifically wanted approaches that could be played along the ground as well as through the air. The shorter Players and Futures layouts extended the same philosophy to beginners, juniors and golfers looking for shorter rounds.
A large-scale reconstruction during 2011-2012 transformed Chase Oaks into The Courses at Watters Creek. A. Weibring and Steve Wolfard led the golf design work, with the Traditions Course as the championship centerpiece.
The renovation reversed the old championship routing, substantially reshaped holes, upgraded irrigation and cart paths, rebuilt bunkers and lakes and extended the course to 7,015 yards. MiniVerde Bermuda was installed on the Traditions greens and Tifway 419 Bermuda on tees and fairways. The former nine-hole component was redeveloped as the Players Course, a par-30 layout containing six par 3s and three par 4s, while the six-hole Futures Course was created for beginners and short-game-oriented play.
Practice facilities were also expanded into a comprehensive performance area.
Watters Creek has continued to be used for regional competitive golf. The Texas Golf Association has staged multiple championships on the Traditions Course, including the North Four-Ball and North Mid-Amateur. The TGA's own history of the venue explicitly connects the present course to the 1986 von Hagge/Devlin design and the 2012 Weibring remodeling, giving the modern facility a documented link to both eras of the property.
The Courses at Watters Creek is operated as a public municipal golf facility reflecting the City of Allen's recreational programme. Its 33 holes provide three distinct formats: the full-length Traditions Course, the nine-hole Players Course and the six-hole Futures Course. The practice centre includes an all-grass driving range, three large short-game greens, five bunkers, fairway- and rough-height practice areas and a large putting green.
The clubhouse operation includes a golf shop, Grill 33, bar service and a banquet pavilion with seating for more than 140 guests. Public tee times and separate resident and senior rates are available.
