Torrey Pines North Course

Origins

The mesa that became Torrey Pines Golf Course had a very different purpose during World War II. S. Army used hundreds of acres of the area as Camp Callan, an anti-aircraft artillery replacement training centre.

The camp closed in 1945 and its temporary military structures were subsequently removed. During the post-war period San Diego pursued the site for public recreation, and part of the mesa was set aside for a municipal golf facility. William P.

Bell designed Torrey Pines, with his son William F. Bell completing the work. The North and South courses opened in 1957 as City of San Diego public golf courses.

Design Philosophy

The original North Course was shaped by the Bells across the exposed coastal mesa, with the routing using the site's canyons, slopes and position above the Pacific rather than a heavily enclosed parkland setting. In 2016 Tom Weiskopf undertook a comprehensive redesign. Weiskopf regarded the project as more than routine renovation and sought to give the North a stronger identity alongside the more famous South Course.

The work altered greens, bunkering, tees and strategic playing angles while retaining the North's comparatively playable character. The current course stretches to 7,258 yards but supplies four shorter official tee sets, allowing substantially different playing lengths.

Development

Torrey Pines has remained municipally owned since opening, but both courses have evolved substantially. The South was rebuilt separately by Rees Jones, while the North's defining modern change came with Tom Weiskopf's 2016 redesign. City cultural-resource documentation identifies the North Course as a roughly 92-acre historic golf-course district originally designed in 1957 by William P.

and William F. Bell; the same documentation records the 2016 course upgrades. The modern North has bentgrass greens, kikuyu-and-rye fairways, 61 bunkers and two documented water hazards.

Recognition

The North Course shares Torrey Pines' longstanding role in professional tournament golf. Torrey Pines became a regular PGA Tour venue in 1968, and the North has traditionally been used alongside the South during the opening rounds of San Diego's annual Tour event. The 2016 redesign drew significant national golf-media attention because Weiskopf was reshaping one half of one of America's best-known municipal golf complexes.

The course is also notable for the volume of public play it handles; current course information reports approximately 92,000 rounds per year on the North.

Today

Torrey Pines North remains owned and maintained by the City of San Diego and is available for public play rather than being reserved for resort guests. San Diego residents with a valid City Resident Card receive substantially reduced green fees, while non-residents can also reserve tee times through the City's ForeUP booking portal. Current facilities shared by the Torrey Pines complex include a driving range, practice putting greens, one of the region's largest golf shops, rental clubs and carts, instruction and restaurant service.
