The Ailsa is the principal championship links at Trump Turnberry on Scotland's Ayrshire coast. The original course was laid out by Willie Fernie in the early twentieth century, but its present form reflects several major rebuilding phases. Wartime use of Turnberry as an airfield left the golf ground heavily altered, leading Philip Mackenzie Ross to reconstruct the course after the Second World War; it reopened in 1951.
Martin Ebert of Mackenzie & Ebert then carried out a comprehensive redesign in 2015-16, changing all 18 holes and creating new coastal holes around the lighthouse. Further Ebert work was introduced in 2025, including relocation of the seventh green toward the shoreline. The championship configuration extends to 7,489 yards and plays as a par 71.
The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 71, 7,489 yards. Designed by Willie Fernie, the course originally opened in 1901. It is open to resort guests. On-site facilities include Golf academy, Pro shop, Clubhouse, Restaurant, Locker rooms, Hotel, Room, Suite, and 3 more.
Turnberry's golf development was created alongside the railway hotel in the early twentieth century, with Open champion Willie Fernie laying out the original links.
The modern Ailsa is the product of successive generations of design. Fernie's original links established the routing; Philip Mackenzie Ross rebuilt the golf landscape after wartime airfield use; Martin Ebert later moved golf closer to the rocky coastline and lighthouse, particularly around holes nine to eleven.
After the Second World War, Mackenzie Ross removed or buried remnants of the airfield and rebuilt the course, which reopened in 1951. Mackenzie & Ebert changed all 18 holes during the 2015-16 project, including new greens and coastal holes. The resort's current official page records additional Ebert enhancements in 2025.
The Ailsa's championship history includes the 1977 Open, remembered for the final-round contest between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus, and the course continues to appear prominently in international golf-course rankings.
The Ailsa remains the championship course at the Trump Turnberry resort, playing to 7,489 yards in its longest published configuration.
