Golf Course Architect
Philip Mackenzie Ross was a Scottish golf course architect active primarily in the mid‑20th century, noted for designing and restoring classic links courses. He worked under Tom Simpson in the 1920s before establishing his own practice in the 1930s.
His oeuvre spans designs across Europe—including France, Spain, Portugal—and the British Isles. Among his acclaimed works, he notably built the Southerness Golf Course in southwest Scotland in 1947 and later restored the Ailsa course at Turnberry after World War II.
Ross served as the first president of the British Association of Golf Course Architects (now EIGCA) in 1972, continuing to work into his later years until his death in 1974.
