Vicars Cross Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course on the eastern side of Chester. The club dates to 1939, when William Ellison Richardson acquired part of Tom Parker's Farm after the closure of Blacon Point Golf Club. Professional Eric Parr, assisted by Royal Liverpool professional Cyril Hughes, laid out the first holes, and the course officially opened on 20 May 1939.
The current men's white course is par 72 and measures 6,349 yards on the club's published scorecard, with a course rating of 71.4 and slope of 132. Additional land acquired in 1987 allowed a revised layout to be completed and opened in May 1990. Later course work included USGA-standard greens and bunker reconstruction designed and overseen by golf architect Ken Moodie.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 5,805m (6,349 yards). Designed by Eric Parr and Cyril Hughes, the course originally opened in 1939. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Short Game Practice Area, Chipping Green, Putting Green, Pro Shop, Restaurant, Bar.
The club's origins lie in the closure of Blacon Point Golf Club in 1938. Former Blacon Point member William Ellison Richardson decided to establish a replacement course in the Chester area and purchased 91 acres of Tom Parker's Farm near Littleton. Former Blacon Point professional Eric Parr moved into the farmhouse at Christmas 1938 and, once weather permitted in February 1939, worked with his relative Cyril Hughes, professional at Royal Liverpool, to lay out the first eleven holes.
Vicars Cross officially opened on 20 May 1939.
The original routing was the work of Eric Parr with assistance from Cyril Hughes. Much later, architect Ken Moodie was responsible for a substantial greens-and-bunkers project, introducing USGA-standard putting surfaces and strategically revised bunkering.
The course was reconstructed after the Second World War and reopened in March 1947. Tree planting during the 1970s helped define the tree-lined character seen today, while a pop-up irrigation system was introduced during the 1976 drought. In 1987 the club purchased another 16 acres, increasing the property to 107 acres.
The revised layout created from that expansion officially opened in May 1990. Drainage works followed after serious flooding in the early 1990s, and later investment included reconstruction of greens and bunkers.
Vicars Cross remains an 18-hole parkland members' club that also welcomes visitors. Its current facilities include extensive practice areas, a professional shop and a clubhouse with bar and catering.
