Origins

Dr Malcolm Morrison developed an interest in golf while studying medicine in Edinburgh and introduced the game to his family. They played on their Woodcocks Road property from 1908. The Rodney Country Golf Club was formally created at a Warkworth Town Hall meeting in 1914.

Did You Know?
Some of Warkworth's earliest golfers made their own wooden clubs from native timbers including puriri, miro, kanuka and tanekaha.

Development

After using four different nine-hole sites between 1908 and 1932, members purchased 88 acres on Matakana Road in 1933. Volunteer working bees cleared swamp, gorse and ti-tree, and the new course opened with nine holes in 1935. It soon reached twelve holes, but World War II slowed completion of the final six.

Today

Warkworth remains an 18-hole community golf club with visitor play, memberships, a full-grass driving range and extensive short-game practice facilities.
