Washington Golf and Country Club is a private 18-hole club at 3017 North Glebe Road in Arlington, Virginia. The organisation dates to 1893 and is regarded by the club as the oldest golf club in the Washington metropolitan area, but golf at the present site began after the club acquired land from Rear Admiral Presley Marion Rixey in the early twentieth century. Rixey and his labourers laid out the first nine holes in 1909, with another nine added shortly afterward.
Donald Ross was then engaged to redesign the course, and William Flynn later extended it after the club acquired approximately 40 additional acres. The present course is compact by modern standards, with Golf Digest listing 18 holes, 6,128 yards and a slope of 130. A major 2018-19 renovation by Eric Iverson of Renaissance Golf Design, working with Mike McCartin, rebuilt greens, tees and bunkers and regrassed the property.
The course is an 18-hole golf course. It plays to par 70, 6,128 yards, slope rating 130. Designed by Donald Ross, the course originally opened in 1909. It is open to members and their guests. On-site facilities include Putting Green, Golf Lessons, Caddies, Golf Carts, Banquet Hall, Bar, Dining.
The organisation traces its beginnings to 1893 and incorporated as Washington Golf Club in January 1894. After losing its earlier leased site, members acquired most of the present Arlington property from Rear Admiral Presley Marion Rixey. In 1909 Rixey and his own labourers laid out nine holes, with another nine following soon afterward.
Donald Ross was brought in to redesign the new course. The club's history preserves a story that Ross offered a 'deluxe' and a 'not so deluxe' plan, with the young club choosing the latter. William Flynn later expanded the course when additional acreage became available, adding another architectural layer to the compact and strongly contoured property.
The club took the Washington Golf and Country Club name in 1915. A major modern renovation began in 2018 under Eric Iverson of Renaissance Golf Design in collaboration with Mike McCartin. The work included regrassing the property and rebuilding greens, tees and bunkers, with the course reopening in 2019.
Washington's long political associations produced its 'Club of the Presidents' identity. Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson and Warren G. Harding are among presidents connected with its membership history.
Washington Golf and Country Club remains a private Arlington club. Golf Digest lists the present 18-hole course at 6,128 yards with a slope of 130 and credits Donald Ross as the principal historic designer.
