Wing Park Golf Course in Elgin, Illinois, is celebrated as the oldest and best-preserved nine-hole municipal golf course in the state, offering a charming blend of history and natural beauty. The course is a 9-hole golf course. Designed by Tom Bendelow, the course originally opened in 1908. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Pro Shop, Restaurant, Cart Rental.
Wing Park exists because William H. Wing, a local philanthropist, donated the land for a public park in Elgin in 1902. Golf arrived a few years later, during a wave of course-building around Chicago in the early 1900s, and the club commissioned Tom Bendelow — the Scottish-born architect who would go on to lay out several hundred courses across the country — to design a modest nine-hole layout on the site.
The course opened on September 5, 1908, and has operated continuously ever since without a significant redesign, an unusually long run for a municipal course of its era. That continuity is precisely what got it listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009 — reviewers and historians alike point to its largely unaltered Bendelow-era holes, small "Victorian postage stamp" greens, and straight, old-school fairways as a rare surviving example of the period's municipal course-building.
