Origins

Cog Hill began with the Coghill brothers, who acquired farmland southwest of Chicago and developed their first golf course in the 1920s. Course No. 1 opened in 1927.

Expansion followed quickly: additional land was acquired and Course No. 2, later known as Ravines, opened in 1929.

Did You Know?
The name 'Dubsdread' was conceived as a warning that a 'dub', or poor golfer, should beware of Course No. 4.

Design Philosophy

The most consequential design phase came with Course No. 4. Joe Jemsek wanted a public course capable of matching the challenge and conditioning associated with leading private clubs, and commissioned Dick Wilson and Joe Lee.

Their 1964 Dubsdread layout used tight landing areas and heavily bunkered, undulating greens to create a tournament-standard test. Rees Jones later redesigned the course in 2008.

Development

Joe Jemsek acquired Cog Hill in 1951 and expanded the complex. Courses No. 3 and No.

4 were added in the 1960s, ultimately creating the present 72-hole facility.

Recognition

Dubsdread has appeared in national rankings including Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest Public Courses and Golf Magazine's Top 100 Courses You Can Play.

Today

Cog Hill remains a public four-course operation. Its 2026 pricing is dynamic, with separate rate structures for Courses No. 1 and 3, Ravines and Dubsdread.
