Golf Course Architect
Sir Thomas Henry Cotton (1907–1987) was an English professional golfer who, following a storied playing career that included three Open Championship titles, transitioned into golf course design in the post‑World War II era. After retiring from competition in the early 1950s, he became a sought‑after course architect in the Algarve region of Portugal, where he designed the Penina Championship Course (the first in the region) and Pestana Alto Golf among others.
Vale do Lobo’s Ocean Course (and its precursor nines) were among his Algarve projects, forming the foundational layout later expanded by Rocky Roquemore. Cotton’s architectural work is characterized by integrating coastal terrain and strategic shot values rooted in his playing expertise.
