Golf Course Architect
Willard Calvert Byrd (1919–2004) was an American landscape architect who, after serving as a Navy quartermaster in World War II, earned his degree from North Carolina State University in 1948 and founded Willard C. Byrd & Associates in 1956.
Over a career spanning nearly five decades, he designed or renovated well over 100 golf courses across the Southeast United States, notably in the Myrtle Beach area, with a design philosophy focused on playability, fairness, low maintenance, and harmony with the natural environment. His portfolio includes diverse works such as Bayonet at Puppy Creek (1995) and the original design of Gates Four in 1967, and he was a Fellow of the American Society of Golf Course Architects.
