Lava Fields is Course No. 5 at Mission Hills Haikou, an 18-hole par-72 layout built across Hainan's volcanic terrain. Mission Hills currently lists the course at 7,475 yards and credits Brian Curley of Schmidt-Curley Design as its architect; independent design references also associate Lee Schmidt with the design.
The course opened in 2010 as part of the rapid development of the ten-course Haikou resort. Its defining feature is the exposed black lava landscape: compared with the neighbouring Blackstone course, Lava Fields has less tree cover, wider views and extensive areas of volcanic rock and sand. Mission Hills lists an average fairway width of 50 yards, average green size of 6,103 square feet and 43 bunkers.
The course is an 18-hole golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,836m (7,475 yards). Designed by Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt, the course originally opened in 2010. It is open to resort guests. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Practice Center, Golf Academy, Restaurant, Hotel, Spa, Pro Shop, Caddie Service, and 1 more.
Lava Fields formed part of Mission Hills' large-scale Haikou development on a site dominated by ancient black volcanic lava. Schmidt-Curley was given responsibility for designing the resort's ten courses, with the individual layouts deliberately given different architectural themes and playing characters.
The design leaves the volcanic setting visually exposed rather than screening holes with extensive tree cover. Mission Hills describes broad fairways arranged to reward useful angles into greens, closely mown chipping areas and large rugged waste bunkers that affect both lines and carries from the tee. Black rock and sand remain dominant visual elements.
Lava Fields opened in 2010 during the first phase of Mission Hills Haikou. Golf Course Architecture reported its opening alongside the Meadow Links and Preserve courses in September of that year, joining Blackstone, Sandbelt Trails and Vintage.
The course quickly received international design recognition. Schmidt-Curley's published accolades list Lava Fields as GOLF Magazine's No. 1 Best New International Golf Course for 2011 and as No.
93 in Golf World UK's world ranking that year.
