About Barunah Plains Golf Course Hamilton Hwy

Barunah Plains once operated a nine-hole golf course as part of a tourism enterprise at the historic Barunah Plains pastoral property on Hamilton Highway at Hesse, Victoria. Heritage Victoria records that the course was added during the 1990s, while historical accounts date its construction to 1995 under the ownership of Graham Mills and his family, who had expanded the property into tourist accommodation to supplement the pastoral business. The former shearers' quarters were used as a golf clubhouse.

By 1998 the clubhouse had received recognition from BRW and an expansion of the golf operation was being considered. The proposed broader country-club development did not proceed, and the property changed ownership in subsequent years. Current Barunah Plains material promotes the homestead, accommodation, weddings and events rather than an operating golf course, and specifically suggests nearby Inverleigh and Winchelsea for golf.

The course is a 9-hole golf course. The course originally opened in 1995.

Origins

Barunah Plains had been a major Western District pastoral property long before golf arrived. After Graham Mills bought the property from the Russell family in 1978, the homestead was restored and the family later developed tourist accommodation as an additional source of income. Historical accounts record that Mills added a nine-hole golf course in 1995.

Development

The golf course formed part of a wider tourism operation incorporating the homestead, cottages and former shearers' quarters. In 1998 plans were approved for a larger country-club, motel and conference development, but that proposal did not ultimately proceed. Heritage Victoria records that the tourism operation later ceased.

The property subsequently changed ownership, including sales in 2001 and 2016.

Recognition

The golf clubhouse was reported as fifth-best in Victoria in a 1998 BRW ranking.

Today

Barunah Plains currently operates primarily as an accommodation, wedding and events property. Its official website does not promote an active golf course and instead recommends nearby golf clubs to guests.
