Origins

The Box Hill Golf Club name dates to an earlier nine-hole course south of Canterbury Road, with the first AGM held on 25 April 1913. That organisation later moved and evolved into Eastern Golf Club. The Box Hill name was revived in 1933 when J.

P. C. Wellard built the Box Hill Public Golf Links on land covering much of today's front nine, and a social group adopted the Box Hill Golf Club identity.

Did You Know?
The area near the modern 15th and 17th tees was used by artists Tom Roberts, Frederick McCubbin and Louis Abrahams during the summer of 1885-86.

Development

Wellard constructed fairways, tees and greens and installed a reticulated watering system. In 1952 club members negotiated to purchase the property but could initially afford only around half the land required for 18 holes. Additional land was leased from the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works in 1967, allowing an 18-hole course to be established.

From the 1980s onward the club acquired previously leased parcels and created the present 15th and 16th holes, which in turn enabled redevelopment of holes 13, 14, 17 and 18.

Today

Box Hill Golf Club now operates an 18-hole, par-71 course measuring 5,618 metres, with golf-shop, coaching, dining and function facilities.
