About Camelback Golf Club - Ambiente Course

Ambiente is one of two 18-hole courses at Camelback Golf Club in Scottsdale. The 7,225-yard, par-72 course was designed by Jason Straka on behalf of Hurdzan Fry Environmental Golf Design and opened for play in November 2013 after a comprehensive reconstruction of Camelback's former Indian Bend Course. The project addressed drainage and flooding problems associated with the Indian Bend Wash while creating substantial elevation changes on what had previously been a very flat site.

Fry/Straka says maintained turf was reduced from about 210 acres to about 90 acres and native trees, shrubs, grasses and wildflowers were reintroduced. 's 2014 Renovation of the Year for public courses. Camelback Golf Club is associated with the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa but has its own golf-club address at 7847 N Mockingbird Lane.

The course is an 18-hole resort golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,607m (7,225 yards). Designed by Jason Straka and Hurdzan Fry Environmental Golf Design, the course originally opened in 2013. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Golf shop, Golf academy.

Origins

Ambiente occupies the site of Camelback Golf Club's former Indian Bend Course. By the early 2010s the resort considered Indian Bend's flat, flood-prone layout inadequate for the property and commissioned a comprehensive reconstruction.

Design Philosophy

Jason Straka and the Hurdzan/Fry team lowered and naturalised the main wash, reused excavated material to raise and reshape golf holes, enlarged greens and tees and replaced extensive maintained turf and non-native vegetation with native habitat. The project was intended to improve drainage, strategy and environmental performance simultaneously.

Development

The rebuilt course opened in November 2013 under the Ambiente name. Maintained turf was reduced from roughly 210 acres to about 90 acres, reducing resource requirements while introducing substantial elevation changes to the formerly flat site.

Recognition

The reconstruction received multiple design and environmental recognitions, including Golf Digest's Best New Courses of 2013, Golf Inc.'s 2014 Renovation of the Year for public courses and recognition through the ASGCA Design Excellence program.

Today

Ambiente remains one of Camelback Golf Club's two 18-hole courses, alongside Padre, and is available for public tee-time booking.
