About We-Ko-Pa Golf Club - Saguaro Course

The Saguaro Course is We-Ko-Pa Golf Club's Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw design at Fort McDowell, Arizona. It opened in 2006 as the club's second 18-hole course and is an 18-hole, par-71 layout measuring 6,966 yards from the Saguaro tees. The official scorecard rates those tees at 72.0/137.

Coore and Crenshaw deliberately departed from the highly separated target-golf model common to desert courses: We-Ko-Pa says little dirt was moved, playing corridors were made comparatively broad, and greens were positioned close to following tees to make walking practical. The routing follows the site's natural contours and uses naturalistic bunkering rather than extensive reshaping. The course is owned as part of an enterprise of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and has no surrounding residential development.

The course is an 18-hole desert golf course. It plays to par 71, 6,966 yards, course rating 72 and slope rating 137. Designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, the course originally opened in 2006. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Golf shop, Practice facility, Restaurant, Push carts.

Origins

We-Ko-Pa Golf Club began with the Scott Miller-designed Cholla Course in 2001. Five years later the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation expanded the property with Saguaro, commissioning Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw for a second and deliberately different course. Saguaro opened in 2006.

Coore and Crenshaw deliberately placed greens close to following tees so Saguaro could be comfortably walked.

Design Philosophy

Coore and Crenshaw followed a minimalist philosophy. We-Ko-Pa states that comparatively little earth was moved, allowing existing elevation changes and landforms to drive the routing. Playing corridors are broader than those of many target-style desert courses, while greens and subsequent tees were kept close together to support walking.

Development

Saguaro became the second half of a 36-hole operation while retaining a separate architectural identity from Cholla. The surrounding land has not been filled with residential development, preserving the open desert context central to the original design.

Recognition

We-Ko-Pa cites a long run at No. 1 among Golfweek's Arizona public-course rankings. The club also records recognition from GOLF.com, Golf Digest and LINKS, including Golf Digest's inclusion among America's 100 greatest public courses.

Today

Saguaro remains a daily-fee public course and an enterprise of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation. The current scorecard lists a par of 71 and a maximum playing length of 6,966 yards.
