About TPC Scottsdale - Champions Course

The Champions Course is the second 18-hole layout at TPC Scottsdale and is distinct from the neighbouring Stadium Course used for the WM Phoenix Open. Randy Heckenkemper designed the present course as a complete 2007 reconstruction of TPC Scottsdale's former Desert Course. It is an 18-hole, par-71 desert layout measuring 7,115 yards from the Black tees.

The official scorecard gives the men's Black rating at 73.2 with a 135 slope, with progressively shorter Black/Blue, Blue, Blue/White, White, White/Red and Red options also rated. TPC describes the routing as following the site's rugged terrain, natural ravines and foothills, with the design intended to allow different strategic approaches rather than favouring one style of player. The course is open for public tee-time booking through TPC Scottsdale.

Origins

The present Champions Course grew out of TPC Scottsdale's original Desert Course. Rather than simply retaining that layout, the facility commissioned Randy Heckenkemper to comprehensively rework the site. TPC describes the resulting course as a complete 2007 revamp, creating a second modern championship layout alongside the better-known Stadium Course.

Did You Know?
The Champions Course is not the WM Phoenix Open layout; that tournament is played on TPC Scottsdale's separate Stadium Course.

Design Philosophy

Heckenkemper routed the course through natural ravines and foothill terrain and sought strategic balance rather than a design that rewarded only one type of player. TPC states that individual holes can be approached in multiple ways, with a particularly demanding four-hole finishing sequence.

Development

The decisive change occurred in 2007 when the former Desert Course was replaced by Heckenkemper's Champions Course. The redesign established the current identity and specifications rather than representing a minor renovation of the previous layout.

Recognition

The Champions Course is routinely presented by TPC Scottsdale as the public-access counterpart to its famous Stadium Course, while retaining its own distinct Randy Heckenkemper design identity.

Today

TPC Scottsdale continues to operate the Champions and Stadium courses as separate 18-hole layouts. The Champions Course is available for public tee-time booking and remains a par-71 desert course measuring 7,115 yards from the Black tees.
