Cape Wickham Links is an 18-hole, par-72 public-access links course at the northern end of King Island, Tasmania. Designed by American architect Mike DeVries in collaboration with Australian designer and golf writer Darius Oliver, the course officially opened in October 2015. The Blue tees measure 6,150 metres (6,725 yards), with the routing moving between dunes, cliffs, rocky coastline and Victoria Cove beneath the Cape Wickham Lighthouse.
Every hole has a view of Bass Strait, and the tees, fairways and greens are seeded with fescue to support firm playing conditions and ground-game options. The course's coastal land strongly influences its design: eight holes run directly beside the coastline, while the routing repeatedly moves inland and back toward the sea. The par-4 18th follows Victoria Cove and allows golfers to choose how much of the beach and cove to challenge from the tee.

The project grew from the discovery of oceanside grazing country at the northern end of King Island. Golf Australia traces the idea to 2010, when Andrew Purchase, owner of golf construction and maintenance company Turnpoint, recognised the site's potential. Darius Oliver visited the area in 2011 and argued that the original privately held land alone would not produce the strongest possible course.
He pushed for access to adjoining Crown land along the coastline, prompting Purchase to pause the development process while negotiations with the Tasmanian Government proceeded. By 2013 the project needed additional capital, and Duncan Andrews, owner of The Dunes Golf Links and an investor in 13th Beach, became its principal investor and developer.
Cape Wickham's routing was developed around the site's dunes, cliffs, rocky shoreline, grazing land and Victoria Cove rather than imposing a conventional pattern on the property. Mike DeVries and Darius Oliver are credited by the club as co-designers. The routing deliberately changes direction around the exposed property, with the course moving from the coast inland and repeatedly returning to Bass Strait.
Broad playing corridors and multiple lines allow wind direction to alter strategy from day to day. The designers made extensive use of existing contours; Golf Australia notes that many inland holes required little earthmoving. Fescue was used across tees, fairways and greens to produce firm surfaces suited to running approaches and links-style shotmaking.
Construction began after the project secured access to the additional Crown land. DeVries spent nearly three months on site refining the routing with Oliver and Andrews. According to Golf Australia's 2026 history, budget pressure led Andrews to continue without DeVries from late 2013, with Oliver overseeing the remaining design work.
Construction was completed before the course officially opened in October 2015. Ownership and operations later changed; Golf Australia reports that Vinpearl Golf Vietnam assumed management and operation in 2022. The property now includes 16 ocean-facing accommodation rooms, while plans have been developed for a permanent clubhouse incorporating a pro shop, restaurant, bar, terrace and locker rooms.
Cape Wickham entered major rankings almost immediately after opening. Golf Australia reports that it debuted at No.5 in the magazine's Australian Top 100 and became its highest-ranked public-access course the following year. Golf Digest subsequently placed it No.24 in the world, and the course has remained in international rankings since.
In the 2026-27 edition of Golf Digest's World's 100 Greatest Courses it is ranked No.13. Australian public-access comparisons published in 2026 also place Cape Wickham first among courses available for green-fee play.
Cape Wickham remains a public-access links course and destination property on King Island. The 18-hole par-72 course measures 6,150 metres from the Blue tees, with White and Red alternatives also published by the club. Every hole has an ocean view, eight run directly alongside the coastline, and the Cape Wickham Lighthouse and Victoria Cove are recurring elements of the routing.
The property combines golf with on-site accommodation and dining and offers motorised carts, rental clubs, pull buggies and caddies by appointment. Domestic and international visitor green fees are separately published for the 2026 calendar year.
